One of the largest sawmills in Europe operates at the Vielsalm wood centre in north-west Belgium. After sawing, the cut wood is dried in drying chambers, the resulting sawdust is processed into wood pellets and the residual wood is thermally treated to cogenerate electricity and heat. In order to increase the production of pellets, the investor decided to build an additional plant for the thermal treatment of treated wood waste, such as dilapidated building timber and furniture waste, and paper sludge. The CHP plant produces 5 MW of electricity and 20 MW of heat in the form of hot water for the production process of wood pellets.
